Join scientists, nature lovers, school children and community members for Waverley’s first marine BioBlitz in March 2025. Get down to the coast, and help discover the diverse plants and animals that make their homes on our beaches, in rockpools and intertidal protected areas. This is an event not to be missed!
What is a BioBlitz?
A BioBlitz is a way to record and identify as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. As part of Waverley’s Marine Diversity program, we are calling on scientists, nature lovers, school children and community members to record local marine animal and plant species between 9am and 5pm on Saturday 29 March using the iNaturalist App or a checklist for younger people.
Council will provide supporting resources in the lead-up to the BioBlitz including a webinar on how to participate and factsheets. A BioBlitz basecamp with scientific support and roving marine experts will be available at the Bondi Pavilion to answer your questions. Everyone is invited to participate.
What do I have to do to participate in the BioBlitz?
Simply explore the beach, rockpools or go underwater to find and record any plants or animals you see, and upload them onto the iNaturalist App. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what the species is, the iNaturalist community and our partners at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science will review and ensure correct identification of all images.
Remember to visit our Basecamp at the Bondi Pavilion where you will find more information about locals species, talk to scientists and learn more about what Council and the community is doing to protect local marine biodiversity.
